There is something about the Louron Valley in winter that is hard to put into words.
Snow-covered peaks, crisp mountain mornings and that feeling of excitement as you head up towards the slopes. Fresh snow, big views and the anticipation of a day in the mountains.
For families and groups of friends, the valley makes a great winter playground because there is so much choice. You can ski different mountains, explore the valley, try something new or simply spend time together with the stunning Pyrénées as your backdrop.
And with four ski resorts within easy reach, there is plenty to explore.
- Peyragudes
Just 9 minutes from L'Ancienne Poste, Peyragudes is our closest major ski resort and one you can easily return to throughout your stay.
The ski area sits between 1,600m and 2,400m, with skiing for a wide range of abilities. Beginners and younger children have covered magic carpets, secure pistes, sledging areas, and a green run entirely dedicated to learning to ski.
For experienced skiers looking for something more challenging, Cap des Hittes reaches 2,400m and has two ungroomed freeride itineraries as well as a black run. There are also some fantastic longer descents, including the nearly 5km Vallée Blanche and the 4km Val des Lumières, with views across the Louron Valley.
- Val Louron
On the opposite side of the valley, Val Louron has a very different feel. It is particularly well suited to families and beginners, with a relaxed atmosphere and an excellent learning area.
The resort offers 20km of pistes for all levels, from gentle nursery slopes and easier runs for those building confidence to red and black runs higher up the mountain for more experienced skiers. The compact, car-free resort makes it easy for families to get around, while the surrounding views across the Pyrénées add to the experience. There are also marked snowshoeing routes and other winter activities away from the pistes.
Together, Peyragudes and Val Louron give the Louron Valley 73 ski slopes and around 60km of skiing, reaching up to 2,400m. With dedicated areas for beginners, a good mix of blue, red and black runs and a snowpark, there is plenty of choice for everyone from first-timers to more experienced skiers. It means everyone can enjoy their own kind of day on the mountain while staying close to home.
- Saint-Lary
A little further afield, Saint-Lary is well worth exploring for a change of mountain. One of the largest ski areas in the Pyrénées, it reaches altitudes of up to 2,500 metres, with around 100km of slopes overlooking the village and its unspoilt Pyrenean charm. The resort offers something for everyone, from a large beginner area and snow park to more challenging terrain and off-piste skiing.
It is a very different experience from the two resorts on either side of the Louron Valley, and makes a great day out for groups with different interests and abilities. With two cable cars providing easy access to the slopes, you can leave the valley behind for the day, explore a new mountain and enjoy a different perspective of the Pyrénées.
- Piau-Engaly
Further into the mountains, Piau-Engaly offers something a little different again. The highest resort in the French Pyrénées, it reaches 2,600 metres and has 65km of slopes with more than 1,200 metres of vertical drop. With 11 ski lifts, including two detachable chairlifts, you can get quickly up into the higher parts of the resort.
There is skiing for all abilities, with a dedicated area for beginners, long blue runs such as La Grande Bleue and La Combe du Piau for intermediates, and 11 red and 7 black runs at altitude for more experienced skiers. It is a great option for those looking to explore a higher mountain environment and experience a different side of skiing in the Pyrénées.
And then there is the valley itself…
Not everyone wants to ski every day, and that is one of the things we love about the Louron Valley.
Leave the skis behind for an afternoon and head out for a winter walk around Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle, with snowy peaks surrounding the lake. Explore Loudenvielle, stop for lunch or a coffee, or simply take your time and enjoy being outside.
There is plenty more to do beyond skiing too. Snowshoeing, dog sledding, paragliding, thermal baths and other mountain activities all form part of the winter experience across the four resorts and surrounding valleys.
For families, groups of friends and multi-generational trips, that variety makes a real difference.
You do not all have to ski at the same level. You do not all have to ski every day. Some can head up the mountain early, others can enjoy a slower morning, and everyone can come back together later.
That is what makes the Louron Valley such a good base for a winter holiday.
